Platykampos Garlic at the Center of International Scientific and Business Interest
Significant developments have recently emerged regarding Platykampos Garlic, further strengthening its position as one of Greece’s most distinctive agri-food products.
Platykampos Garlic is gaining new momentum, as recent developments confirm the growing interest it attracts from both the scientific community and international markets.
According to recent announcements, the Japanese pharmaceutical company Wakunaga Pharmaceuticals has completed a multi-year evaluation process of the local “entopio” garlic variety produced by the Platykampos Agricultural Cooperative. The collaboration began in 2020 with the shipment of samples to Japan, and following a series of analyses and quality assessments, exports to the company’s facilities in Hiroshima have now been approved.
Wakunaga is internationally recognized for its research and development of aged garlic extract used in dietary supplements, with its flagship product Kyolic. For this reason, the selection of Platykampos Garlic is considered particularly significant, as it reflects the recognition of the product’s exceptional quality and unique characteristics.
At the same time, a comprehensive genomic (DNA) analysis of Platykampos Garlic is underway in collaboration with the Academy of Athens and research teams from Greece and Japan. The initiative aims to provide scientific documentation of the variety’s uniqueness while strengthening its prospects for certification and international recognition.
